This initiative involves the deployment of drifting buoys to provide valuable sea-level pressure observations, which are crucial for weather forecasting and climate monitoring. The buoys will operate for up to two years and are part of a global observing system that enhances the accuracy of forecasts by offering more accurate initial conditions. The M3E project is a collaborative effort involving organizations such as the Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale, Foundation Euro Mediterranean Center on Climate Change, E-SurfMar, and Agenzia Italia Meteo. The project is particularly significant given the region’s recent extreme events, such as Storm Daniel in September 2023, and aims to improve the understanding and response to such occurrences.

Focal Point: Pierre-Marie Poulain

Resilience and Preparedness to Tropical Cyclones over Southern Africa (REPRESA)

(2023 – 2026)

REPRESA focuses on the impacts of landfalling tropical cyclones (TCs) in Madagascar, Malawi, and Mozambique. Through knowledge sharing from different perspectives, REPRESA aims to leave a long-term legacy of improved in-country capability in multi-hazard impact-based forecasting, improved community-level early warning communication and improved resilience to tropical cyclones.

Focal point: Elizabeth Kendon

UNESCO UT City CoLab

(2025 – 2028)

The UT and UNESCO City CoLab is an innovative, community-centric, partnership platform to develop tools, data products, and a localized understanding of how weather extreme forecasts, and information can be used by the community and stakeholders with a particular focus on cities.
